I've always been intrigued with old family pictures…curious about the lives and loves of these people in the photos. One day I found hundreds of old family pictures stuffed into a musty plastic bin in my mother's attic. In an effort to honor the lives of the lives of the people in these old photos - I began my 'family tree' project.
I had all of the pictures grouped and framed, 44 in all. I knew I wanted to do some sort of family tree but really had no idea how to start. Margot at Enchant Design met with me and immediately understood what I was trying to convey and she came up with some great ideas on how to proceed. The mural she painted starts with a tree and the pictures are hung in random order on the limbs of the tree. Each picture is surrounded by colored leaves as if a stirred by a cool breeze. There are 16 different colors of leaves - each color representing a great-great grandparent, eight on my mother's side and eight on my father's side. The leaves surrounding each picture show the lineage of that individual or group of individuals.
The mural incorporates an old quote that I'd found years ago that reads: "If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people."
Margot, thank you for helping me to honor my family in such a loving and original way!
